8 He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love.
9 In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him.
34 A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another.
35 By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.
Today’s opening Scripture tells us that knowing God is loving Him. To love God is to keep His commandments, and His commandments are not grievous. What is God’s commandment in the New Testament? John 13:34-35 tells us that God’s commandment is to love one another as Jesus loved us and gave Himself for our sins. We cannot truly love God by loving His people and not come into an intimate knowledge of Him. True knowledge of God is not book knowledge; it is not head knowledge. True knowledge of God is heart, intimate, spiritual knowledge. We come to know God as we love Him, which is loving your neighbours as Christ loved you when He died for your sins and took your place as your substitute.
Love is the visible attribute of God. Love is the very essence and substance of the divine life. If you want to know whether God is in a place or God is doing something, just sense or perceive whether love is there or not. God is everywhere love abides and His very manifest presence is right there. When God is made manifest, He can be known and perceived tangibly. In John 14:21-23, the Word declares that where love abides, God dwells; and where God dwells, there He is revealed. God is Love! God’s love is the doorway into the fullness of God. God is light; God is life and God is Love. Essentially, God is Love. It is in God’s love that we see light and it is by His love that we have received life. Beloved, to know God is to love Him, and to love Him is to love your neighbour; for whosoever does not love, does not know God, for God is love. The love of God was manifested towards us in giving His Son Jesus Christ to die for our sins, that we might live through Him. Therefore, the true measure of love is giving, sacrificial giving; giving your best to God in all things. How? Giving your best to your neighbour. When you love your neighbour, you have demonstrated love for God.
