Through faith he kept the passover, and the sprinkling of blood, lest he that destroyed the firstborn should touch them.
1 Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.
2 For by it the elders obtained a good report.
3 Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear.
Today’s opening verse tells us that Moses kept the Passover through faith. The Passover is a feast inaugurated by God in Egypt to avert from Israel the plague of destroying the firstborn of both man and beast. God instructed Moses to tell the children of Israel to take a lamb each per family and kill it and put the blood on the lintel and the doorposts of their houses that the angel of destruction might pass them over. They had to do this before the angel passes through the land of Egypt. God wanted them to believe Him first and act in faith before seeing His salvation. Just believing God’s Word as to the Passover without acting was not enough. They had to trust God in faith and act on His Word to avoid the destruction of the firstborn of their children and animals.
It is important we understand that faith and belief are not the same. As we have learnt in previous devotionals: faith requires action. Bible faith is not passive. No, it is not! It is always premised on the Word we have believed and the action that goes with that. For Israel, if they had faith in God, they would put the blood on the doorposts and lintels of their houses. Their faith was demanded for before God’s salvation was made manifest to them. Why was that so? Well, the only proof that you believe God is your action of faith. No matter how much you profess to believe God, if your action betrays your faith, then you don’t really believe Him; but if your action does not betray your faith, then your faith is faith indeed. Belief may not have action, but faith always has action. If thoughts of unbelief are accommodated, then faith isn’t genuine. Questions like: “What if no angel of destruction passes through the land of Egypt that night?” or “Is the blood of a lamb or goat efficacious to avert the plague of destroying the firstborn of man and beasts?”. All those questions have no place where faith in God stands. God’s Word of instruction to Israel through Moses was more real to them than the rituals of the Passover. What makes the Passover worthwhile is the instruction from Jehovah and acting on that instruction is what makes their faith worthwhile, also.
MY SOLID FRONT (YOUR CONFESSION):
In the Name of Jesus Christ, I declare that I am a believer and I walk by faith and not by sight. God’s Word is good in my case and life; therefore, I live by acting on the Word of God. Amen.
