20 My son, attend to my words; incline thine ear unto my sayings.
4 But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.
The Word is the centre and substance of the Christian life. Without the Word, we can do nothing; but with the Word, we can do all things. The Word was in the beginning, and was with God, and is God. All things were made by the Word, and there was nothing made without Him. The Word is light; it is power; it is food; it is wisdom; it is at the core of the very existence and creation of everything. The Word is everything, and everything is the Word, and having made everything there is in existence, the Word is over and above everything. Pre-eminence is of the Word. The Word is Lord over all, and to Him everyone is accountable. Simply put, everything swings on the Word. Therefore, it is important to give attention to the Word. Anyone who despises or ignores the Word does that to his peril.
It is important to give attention to the Word because God does everything of His will according to the Word. Everything that has happened and will happen in your life has been and will be by the Word of God. The Word is God’s will; it is God’s mind. We are born again by the Word and are sustained by Him. Matthew 4:4 tells us that “Man shall not live by bread alone but by every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God.” Now, how do we give attention to the Word? Proverbs 4:20 tells us how. It says “My son, give attention to my words; incline thine ear unto my sayings. Let them not depart from thine eyes; keep them in the midst of thine heart. For they are life unto those that find them, and health to all their flesh.” In giving attention to the Word, three (3) things are important: listening to the Word (that’s your ear inclined to the Word), meditation in the Word (that’s your eyes not departing from the Word) and practicing the Word (that’s keeping the Word in your heart). So, your ear, your eyes and your heart are all involved in giving attention to the Word. Did you see that? Now, the effect of giving attention to God’s Word is life (fulfilment and happiness) to you and health to all your flesh (body). As you give attention to the Word of God you find life, abundant life, that is, you will live indeed in the fullness of God’s plan and purpose, and will find health, that is, total vitality from the crown of your head to the soles of your feet.
My Solid Front (Confession):
Heavenly Father in the Name of Jesus, I declare that Your Word is my life. I am born of Your Word to live by Your Word; therefore, I live by Your Word. I give attention to Your Word every day; I meditate on Your Word daily in the Name of Jesus Christ. Amen.
