16 And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever;
17 Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.
18 I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you.
8 I will instruct thee and teach thee in the way which thou shalt go: I will guide thee with mine eye.
In our opening Scripture, the Lord Jesus calls the Holy Spirit ‘our Comforter’. In Greek, the Word Comforter is Parakletos – the One who is sent alongside another to help, to stand by, to assist, to lift, to prop up. The Amplified translation further breaks it down. He calls the Holy Spirit our Counsellor: The Holy Spirit gives us counsel. Counsel is a step ahead of teaching. Someone may teach and you have a general understanding of what has been taught, but you do not know what to do per se. In other words, you do not know the exact thing to do with such knowledge, but you cannot get counsel and not know what to do to meet your needs. The word ‘Counsellor’ is rooted in Psalms 32:8, it says “I will instruct thee and teach thee in the way which thou shalt go: I will guide thee with mine eye.” To instruct means to tell you what to do, which means the Holy Spirit will tell you what to do; to teach means to tell you how to do it and to guide means to lead you in the way that you should go. In other words, even if you go beyond the boundary of God’s instruction, He will say “no-no, that’s not it, don’t trespass.” What an amazing Counselor we have in the Holy Spirit.
The Holy Spirit is our Helper. To help simply means to provide assistance and that word “Helper” is pregnant with a lot of good stuff. It means when you are weak, He is your Helper; when you need counsel, He is your Helper; when you need someone to intercede for you, He is your Helper. He is Your Intercessor, Advocate, Strengthener and Standby. The Holy Spirit is the One that the Father has sent alongside us to counsel us, to help us, to intercede for us, to be our advocate, to strengthen us and to stand by us. Sometimes people say they don’t have anybody to help them, and they are depressed, weak, and confused, but that is not with the Holy Spirit. If a believer experiences any or all of these, it means that such a believer must have ignored the ministry of the Holy Spirit. You cannot be confused with the Holy Spirit guiding and leading you. No, a million times no! It means such a person didn’t look in His direction and began considering his or her circumstances, inadequacies or inabilities, instead of receiving the ministry of the Holy Spirit. Beloved, the Holy Spirit is your Helper, don’t ignore Him. Trust Him to guide you; trust Him to help you. Refuse to lean on your own understanding but acknowledge Him in all your ways!
